Please click on the arrow and read over the checklist to see if you may be caught up in a scam.

1. How are they wanting to be paid?  Western Union, Money gram?

Most reputable shipping companies will offer credit card processing, Paypal or cash upon delivery. This ensures you that if a problem arrise you can retrieve your money back. With western union, money grams, bank transfers, etc. you will be unable to track and retrieve your payment.

2. Do they claim that the pet will be flown and then delivered to your house?

This type service is extremely expensive.Well over a thousand dollars and their isnt that many available companies that offer this type service.

Ground shippers and the airlines is two separate entities. Ground shippers do not work with the airlines.

3. Have you actually been able to talk with the shipping company on the phone or is it all done by texting or emails?

If you cannot speak with someone directly by phone beware.

4. Does the seller or shipping company sound like foreigners?

Most of the shipping scammers are foreigners.

5. Does the seller claim its their shipping company that they use and the shipping company will get back to you with more information via email?

Most individuals that are re-homing a pet or selling a pet do not have their own shipping companies that they use. They will want you (the consumer) to set up arrangements on how to get the pet to you. Some breeders have a ground pet shipping company that they use to ship their puppies but in all cases they are being ground transported and not flown. Flying is a different method they use but you will have to pick the pet up from the airport as it will not be delivered to your house personally after the flight.

6. Is the shipper extremely persistent with numerous texts or emails rushing you to send the money?

Your reputable shippers will not consistently aggravate you to hurry you to send the money to them.

7. Is their a hard luck story associated with the selling or re-homing of the pet?

Most scammers try to tug at your heart strings with a sad story.

Already sent some money in? What to possibly expect next.

1. They will be contacting you back for more money.

Common Requests…
  • Upgraded crate fee
  • Insurance or additional insurance needed
  • Boarding fee
  • Quarantine Fee
  • Additional shots fee

If no more money is elected to be sent they will possibly threaten you with pet abandonment and bringing in the FBI or a lawsuit.
Some will claim the owner tried to retake possession and was refused because the document of ownership is in your name.
Please do not worry as their is no shipping company, pet(s),breeder, or actual pet owner. Every part of this was all a scam.

Legitimate pet shipping companies make all fees known "UP FRONT", and do not request more money after a set up with them has been made.

The International Pet and Animal Transport Association (IPATA) warns that Pet Scams are impacting pet lovers worldwide.

“Scammers” offer to provide free or inexpensive puppies, just for the price of shipping.  There is usually no dog and no shipment, so please take precautions before paying money for services that may not exist. Other animals frequently offered are monkeys, birds, snakes, and small exotic animals.

Unfortunately, these criminal “scammers” pretend to be legitimate pet shippers like Pet-Express and other reputable pet shippers.

 IPATA states that;
“Pet scam criminals often use free websites, Craig’s List, local newspapers, or Facebook to advertise pets that do not exist.  Expensive animals, like Bulldogs or toy breeds, are offered at very low prices.  Animals are offered up for adoption at no cost—all you have to do is pay for the shipping.  If you see an ad like this, chances are it is a scam.

These scammers are criminals.  Their goal is to take your money.  They will lie, they will tell you sob stories, they will send you pictures of adorable animals, they will assure you of their faith and religion – anything to get your money!  They use the names of legitimate pet shippers; they pirate websites; they illegally use logos of other companies.  If you see an offer that is too good to be true, it probably is.  It probably is a scam!”

Scammers also regularly use Western Union or Money Gram as a payment method.  Unlike PayPal or a recognized credit card merchant system, Western Union and Money Gram payments are often untraceable and non-refundable.

If you believe that you are being “scammed”, ask the shipper for their name and and then contact our office to confirm that the shipment is legitimate.
